Video: Luxoft on overcoming fragmentation in HMI design

Serkan Arslan, director, global business development automotive, Luxoft, on the importance of not getting stuck on any one particular mode of interaction when designing automotive HMI of the future.

In this video from the Consumer Telematics Show 2014, Serkan Arslan, director, global business development automotive, Luxoft, speaks with TU's Robert Gray about the importance of a mutimodal, situation-aware approach to HMI design.

According to Arslan, there is a great deal of fragmentation when it comes to HMI design for the connected automobile. This fragmentation is caused by individual carmakers pushing their own solutions, but it is also the result of regional preferences. For example, U.S. carmakers put emphasis on voice, while German OEMs continue to push physical controllers and Asia prefers touch-based interfaces.

“Everyone is trying to define what’s best for the user, but in reality, it’s a kind of mix of all,” he says.

Getting that mix right is still some years away. But the various elements of it are already taking shape. According to Arslan, the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW i3, for example, come with digital clusters that change dynamically depending on the driving situation. Voice controls continue to evolve towards natural voice processing. And advances are being made in how to stitch the various elements together through multimodal and situation-aware HMI.
