Schwinke is director of developer ecosystem and application development for GM’s Global Connected Consumer business unit. Among his many duties, he is responsible for a team in charge of a recently introduced SDK and vehicle framework for app developers, and he also heads up GM’s app certification efforts.

Previously, Schwinke spent more than 15 years with OnStar, where he led a team that invented, designed and piloted many of the automotive industry’s first telematics services. Prior to joining OnStar in 1997, Schwinke worked at Ford Motor Company and GTE Government Systems in Mountain View, California, designing a variety of wireless communication subsystems and components. He holds 11 patents in the area of telematics.

Schwinke spoke to TU’s Jan Stojaspal about car makers barely “scratching the surface” when it comes to context-aware apps. According to him, the main trends that will make the in-car app experience more context-aware and personalized include 4G connectivity, proliferation of in-car camera technology, Big Data and wearables. But privacy concerns will continue to pose an obstacle.

Jan Stojaspal is the executive editor of Telematics Update.
